Jane Eyre — CHAPTER XI

After a long October journey, Jane waits uneasily at the George Inn in Millcote until a servant arrives to take her six miles to Thornfield. She reaches the hall at night and is received with unexpected warmth by Mrs. Fairfax, who offers food, comfort, and a small adjoining bedroom that eases Jane’s fatigue and anxiety.

In the morning, Jane admires Thornfield’s seclusion and grounds. Conversing with Mrs. Fairfax, she learns that Thornfield is owned by Mr. Rochester and that Mrs. Fairfax is the housekeeper, distantly related by marriage to the Rochester family. This clarification reassures Jane about their social equality.

Adèle Varens, a lively French-speaking child, arrives with her nurse, Sophie. Jane, fluent in French, quickly engages Adèle, who describes her voyage to England and past life with her mother. Jane starts lessons in the library-schoolroom, finding Adèle clever but unaccustomed to steady work. The room’s books and instruments promise a richer life than Lowood.

Mrs. Fairfax shows Jane the grand but seldom-used dining and drawing rooms, kept ready for Mr. Rochester’s sudden visits. Jane probes for Mr. Rochester’s character and learns only that he is a respected, somewhat peculiar gentleman who has traveled widely.

The tour continues through the antique-laden third storey and up to the roof for a panoramic view. On returning through a dim corridor, Jane hears a distinct, mirthless laugh. Startled, she calls to Mrs. Fairfax, who attributes the sound to Grace Poole, a sewing servant. Grace appears briefly, plain and impassive, and is cautioned to keep quiet, leaving Jane intrigued by the house’s concealed mysteries.
