Wuthering Heights — CHAPTER XX

At Edgar Linton’s instruction, Nelly rises early to take Linton home to his father, Heathcliff, while concealing his departure from Cathy to prevent her visiting Wuthering Heights. Nelly soothes the reluctant, sickly boy with assurances that his absence will be short and that his relatives will visit.

During the ride, Linton reveals he never knew he had a father and questions why his parents lived apart. Nelly offers evasive explanations and encourages Linton to anticipate meeting Heathcliff and exploring the moors with Hareton, though Linton remains anxious.

They arrive at Wuthering Heights, where Heathcliff, Joseph, and Hareton greet them. Heathcliff harshly appraises his son, mocking Linton’s frailty and declaring him wholly his mother’s child. Linton clings to Nelly, uncertain that the stern stranger is his father, but Heathcliff drags him forward and asserts paternity.

Heathcliff declares he will be kind only to monopolize Linton’s affection and, more importantly, to ensure his design: Linton, as prospective owner of Thrushcross Grange, will secure Heathcliff’s ultimate control over both estates. He outlines comforts arranged for Linton—a furnished room, a tutor, Hareton’s obedience—while admitting he despises the boy’s weakness.

When Joseph offers coarse porridge, Linton refuses it; Heathcliff orders more suitable food, recognizing the boy’s delicacy. Seizing a moment, Nelly slips away, but Linton screams not to be left. The household restrains him, and Nelly rides off, ending her brief guardianship.
