Jane Eyre — CHAPTER I

Overview

Jane Eyre, isolated at Gateshead, seeks refuge in a book but is discovered by her cousin John, who assaults her and asserts his superiority. Jane resists, provoking an outcry. Mrs. Reed blames Jane and has her confined to the red-room, cementing the household’s unjust treatment and Jane’s alienation.

Summary

On a bleak, rainy afternoon at Gateshead, Jane Eyre is excluded from Mrs. Reed and her children’s cozy drawing-room circle for being insufficiently “childlike.” She slips into the adjoining breakfast-room, hides in a curtained window-seat, and immerses herself in Bewick’s History of British Birds, finding solace in its stark arctic imagery.

Her retreat ends when John Reed searches for her. Prompted by Eliza, he discovers Jane and summons her with domineering airs. Fourteen-year-old John insults Jane as a dependent and claims ownership of the house and books. He throws her book at her; the blow cuts her head, transforming fear into defiance.

Jane denounces John as “like a murderer” and a tyrant. Enraged, John grapples with her; in pain and panic, Jane fights back, and John bellows for help. Eliza and Georgiana fetch Mrs. Reed, who arrives with Bessie and the maid Abbot. Observing only the aftermath, the adults condemn Jane’s “passion.”

Mrs. Reed orders Jane removed to the red-room and locked in, disregarding John’s violence. Carried upstairs by the servants, Jane is punished, confirming the household’s bias and deepening Jane’s sense of injustice and isolation.
