Ravna arrives at the burned hillside and is received by Woodcarver, who reports Steel’s collapse and retreat after an attempted self-destruction. Under the great dome, Ravna reunites with Johanna and Jefri and finally meets Amdi. They lead her to the lander, where Pilgrim guards Pham, who sits enmeshed in a brilliant, shifting artifact Ravna recognizes as Countermeasure.

Pham speaks in a distant, godshatter-driven voice, claiming “Riders’ Myth” is real and that Countermeasure can act against the Blight. He initiates a “reverse surge,” locally lifting the Zone to High Beyond/Low Transcend levels; outside, Scrupilo and others witness the sun dim as energy is drained. The Blight’s fleet accelerates dangerously close due to the raised Zone, intensifying the crisis.

Pham reveals Countermeasure was designed by forces beyond Powers, and that he has signaled a far greater response: an immense, long-lasting Surge. He predicts the Bottom of the Beyond will recede past the fleet, trapping it without ramscoops. As the Surge builds, he suggests it could even encyst the Blight as happened aeons before.

The artifact’s light falters. Pham reassures Ravna moments before Countermeasure completes its task; then the glow dies and a bitter smell fills the hold. The sun returns outside, but within, Pham lies dead, his body intermingled with the now-brittle Countermeasure.

Ravna confirms that ultradrives are gone and the OOB is crippled in attitude control: the world and ship now lie in the deep Slow Zone, safe from the Blight but cut off. Allies remove Pham’s body. Grief settles over the survivors as they mourn Blueshell and Pham and begin to face a Slow Zone future.
