Overview
Peregrine Wickwrackscar and Scriber Jaqueramaphan arrive at Woodcarver’s transformed, militarized city with the wounded Two-Legs. Before a full council, the alien’s dexterity and speech provoke fear and fascination. Scrupilo is cuffed by the alien. Woodcarver concludes the visitor may represent a superpack-level species and orders it housed near her and treated under her own care.
Summary
The chapter opens with the history of Woodcarver’s domain: founded centuries ago by a singular, experimental pack who refined soul-composition and fostered innovation, drawing pilgrims and ideas that transformed the region. Over time, the settlement grew into an advanced, influential state without overtly subverting the south.
Peregrine Wickwrackscar and Scriber Jaqueramaphan arrive by boat after rain, escorted warily but celebrated as heroes. Peregrine, injured by the alien’s earlier attack, notes the city’s dramatic expansion—new harbor works, heavy walls, soldiers—and feels unease at the militarization.
They are taken through grand halls lined with unprecedented grayscale mosaic “landscapes,” stunning Scriber. In a vast council chamber, Woodcarver appears in a misbalanced five-member form—old, partly blind, and including pups—yet retains authority. Vendacious, the Lord Chamberlain, convenes the council as the alien is brought to the floor.
Scriber recounts the flying house, ambush, and rescue. Curiosity mounts, and Scrupilo, an impatient councillor, approaches the alien despite Peregrine’s warnings. When Scrupilo loosens its bindings, the Two-Legs strikes his tympanum with a tentacled “hand,” then emits strange mouth-speech, startling the assembly.
Woodcarver directs the discussion to the alien’s implications: a singleton with dexterity rivaling a whole pack and possible coordinated speech. Scrupilo posits the heretical idea that the aliens might be intelligent singletons, or even superpacks. Recognizing the stakes—either learnable parity or overwhelming superiority—Woodcarver decrees the alien must be saved and befriended. Overruling Vendacious, she orders it moved to a lodge near her own and asserts she will perform the surgery herself.
