Chapter Four

Oliver Doyle explains Collin Poole’s will to Sonya: she inherits Poole Manor, its contents, a maintenance trust covering taxes and upkeep, additional assets, and a token five-percent interest in the Poole businesses. The inheritance requires her to live at the manor at least forty weeks per year for three years; contesting is possible but difficult.

After Oliver departs, Sonya reads the will, noting personal bequests to the Doyle family and antique diamond-and-sapphire earrings to Winter Rogan MacTavish. Reeling, she calls Cleo and drives to Winter’s to share everything.

With Cleo present, Sonya recounts the twins’ separation and Collin’s late discovery of Drew. Winter, shocked, recalls Drew’s recurring dreams of a mirror showing a near-identical man and of a cliffside manor. Photos of Poole Manor match Drew’s sketches, intensifying the sense of a long-standing, inexplicable connection.

They search Drew’s attic studio and find sketchbooks filled with the manor and a predatory-framed mirror reflecting Drew and, seemingly, Collin at various ages—sometimes passing a toy car between them. Over dinner, they connect details like Collin’s bequest of Matchbox cars to Oliver’s son, echoing Drew’s cherished set.

Winter contacts her boss, Marshall, who promptly schedules a document review with Oliver. With legal guidance pending and family informed, Sonya keeps the sketchbooks and begins leaning toward traveling to Maine to understand her inheritance and her father’s bond to the house.
