Chapter Twenty-nine

1916, Poole Manor: Lisbeth Anne Poole marries Edward Whitmore in a joyous village wedding. During the reception, Lisbeth suffers sudden stabbing pains and convulses. A woman in black—unseen by others—stands over her, says “It will be over soon,” removes Lisbeth’s wedding ring, and Lisbeth fades, implying Hester’s lethal interference and ring theft.

Present morning: Sonya and Cleo start the day; the manor seems calm until doors slam, the doorbell rings, and the servants’ door creaks. Determined not to hide, Sonya taunts Hester. A furious icy gale tears through the library, toppling papers and lifting Sonya’s chair before suddenly ceasing. Sonya steadies herself, refuses to leave, and returns to work.

Cleo departs for a yoga photo shoot with Corrine. As Sonya works, Jack entertains Yoda; later, Sonya finds a neat note beside the treat box reading “Toss it,” confirming Jack’s written communication. Cleo returns; together they review the successful studio shots, selecting top poses (Reverse Warrior, Warrior Three, One-Legged Bridge).

Near five, Corrine sends bonus outdoor images: Trey playing baseball, with Owen assisting. The dynamic action shots delight Sonya and fit the campaign. Sonya races to show Cleo, who approves and notes brand visibility.

Evening plans shift when Trey calls from the hospital: a client, recently divorced, was brutally assaulted by her ex despite a restraining order. Trey stays to support her until family arrives; Owen takes the client’s dog. Sonya and Cleo, moved by Trey’s anger and compassion, decide to cook at home, light candles for the victim and for Trey, postpone sharing recent hauntings to spare him worry, and discuss Sonya’s deepening feelings and the belief that “you make the magic.”
