Overview
Dr. Welty Pittman confronts Charlie at Idlewilde, admits his paternity, and reveals Tom’s death means Meg can be retrieved. He authorizes Birdie to collect Meg instead of Garnett. The next morning, Birdie and Frances rush to the orphanage, expose Welty’s visit, and—over Garnett’s objections—secure Meg’s file and de facto custody.
The club closes, Frances faces truths about Rory, and Mrs. Tartt grieves in a midnight dance, signaling the enterprise’s end and a new mission: bringing Meg home.
Summary
Before opening, Birdie settles Mrs. Tartt in the attic with a radio while Frances anxiously cuts her hair, vowing frugality for Rory. With the homecoming hop siphoning students, the club is quieter when Dr. Welty Pittman arrives. Charlie confronts him publicly, accusing him of abandoning their daughter and enabling Garnett’s cruelty. Welty admits ignorance of Garnett’s abuse, then reveals Tom Heidelberg has drowned and Meg must be retrieved from Byhalia. He says he has empowered Birdie to collect Meg and leaves money; after he departs, Charlie collapses in tears.
Later, Birdie and Frances share a tense, honest conversation about Rory and money, and Birdie declares the club finished. In the moonlit night, Birdie witnesses Mrs. Tartt and Charlie wordlessly dance, then Mrs. Tartt dances alone, grieving.
At dawn, Frances warns that Garnett is leaving to get Meg. Birdie and Frances race to the orphanage, where they find Welty waiting. Birdie pleads to adopt or at least collect Meg, but Garnett dismisses her as unmarried and opens the mold-ridden office that once confined Meg. Birdie announces Welty visited Charlie, forcing a confrontation. Garnett insults Frances; Frances fires back that Welty has an illegitimate child.
Pressed, Welty admits he saw Charlie and turns against Garnett’s control. As a staffer, Pripp, listens in, Garnett nearly declares Meg “belongs to me” before correcting to “the state.” Welty threatens to go to court, then hands Birdie Meg’s file and instructs her to ensure Meg’s happiness. Birdie warns Garnett she’ll expose the Anti-Vice League’s ignorance of its president. Birdie leaves determined to fetch Meg, while Garnett reels.
