Birdie secures power, arranges a near-90% mortgage payment, and takes a fragile breath with a date from banker Jack—only to learn he is married. As creditors close in and the telephone is cut, Frances slips Birdie Meg’s new address. Birdie plans a cautious letter. Charlie then reveals Welty Pittman is Meg’s father and details Garnett’s long campaign that led to Charlie’s sterilization, raising the stakes for protecting Meg.
Summary
On Saturday, Birdie convinces Frances to finger-wave her hair for a date with Jack Walsh, the bank man who helped negotiate a grudging deal: if Viktoria Tartt can pay 90% of the mortgage, the bank will grant one more month to clear the balance. Birdie withholds small sums for essentials and restores gas and electricity, leaving a narrow margin and little cash.
Birdie and Jack go to the Lyric for a talkie and then to the drugstore. Birdie misjudges Jack for ignoring a destitute patron, but he explains he avoided shaming the man. The date is warm and promising; Jack offers to check the bank’s long-distance call logs for Rory’s leads and kisses Birdie’s cheek at the door.
As weekend turns to Monday, creditors descend and the phone is cut off. Amid the strain, Frances returns from the Orphan and reveals Jack is married with a child, crushing Birdie’s hope. Frances quietly gives Birdie Meg’s new address in Byhalia, noting she hadn’t sent the welfare follow-up letter because Garnett dismissed it.
Meanwhile, Charlie tirelessly cleans, rearranges, and even dances with Viktoria to buoy her spirits. Birdie proposes writing Meg’s new family under the guise of a welfare check-in to learn about Meg and build contact without alarming them.
In a private talk, Charlie warns Garnett will pursue Meg. Pressed for why, Charlie confesses that Welty Pittman—Garnett’s husband—is Meg’s father.
