Overview
Marek confesses his Nizahlan lineage, the deaths of his siblings, and a buried incident: the Mufsids freed a high-risk Jasadi prisoner and killed his brother after an attempt on the Nizahl Heir. Later, Vaun provokes and nearly kills Sylvia during training.
Sylvia unleashes fire and telekinesis, poised to execute Vaun until Arin arrives. She chooses restraint, wounding Vaun instead. These revelations and choices expose hidden history, heighten intra-guard tensions, and clarify Sylvia’s moral line.
Summary
Sylvia reflects on Marek’s reckless charm and her anger over his “lovers’ spat” remark that endangered Sefa. When Marek seeks forgiveness, Sylvia demands truth. Marek reveals his prestigious Nizahlan military family, the deaths of siblings Amira and Darin, and brother Binyar’s disappearance during the post–Blood Summit siege on Jasad.
Marek then recounts how their brother Hani pursued influence at the Citadel but was slain when Jasadis freed a high-risk Jasadi prisoner from Nizahl’s most secure dungeon. The prisoner had nearly killed the Nizahl Heir, and the incident was buried. Marek names the rescuers: the Mufsids. Sylvia connects this to guarded memories among Arin’s protectors.
With Arin away hunting the Urabi behind the Ruby Hound, training continues. Vaun arranges to face Sylvia alone, pressing for bare-fisted combat. He exploits her known weaknesses and, after Sylvia goads him by insinuating intimacy with Arin, Vaun snaps and brutally overpowers her, intent on killing her.
On the edge of suffocation, Sylvia unleashes her fire harmlessly around herself but searing to Vaun, then telekinetically hurls a curved sword to pin him. Arin arrives, urging her to drop the weapon. Sylvia weighs vengeance against what remains of her soul, guided by the ever-repeating wall scene of Palia and Niyar.
Choosing restraint, Sylvia redirects the sword to slice through Vaun’s thigh and pin him to the wall rather than kill him. She preserves her moral boundary while asserting power, leaving Vaun maimed and the team’s fractures laid bare.
