Chapter Eight
Overview
Sylvia ambushes Arin but is quickly overpowered; their contact triggers a volatile reaction with her constrained magic. Spurred by a vision of Niphran, Sylvia breaks through and blasts Arin before blacking out. Awakening healed beside the corpse she killed, Sylvia spars verbally with Arin and infers his true mission: he is covertly hunting other Jasadis under the Alcalah cover and is preserving her because she is useful.
Summary
Arin enters the relic room as Sylvia lies in wait. She lunges with a dagger, but Arin catches her hand and snaps her wrist, disarming and pinning her. His bare touch sends searing pain through Sylvia’s cuffs as her trapped magic convulses; his eyes darken as he reacts to it, seeming half-entranced and dangerously intent.
A vision of Niphran urges Sylvia to fight and accept who she is. As Arin’s touch draws and churns her magic without release, Sylvia yields to it; the room shakes, the cabinet topples, and a surge throws Arin across the chamber. Darkness takes Sylvia as debris collapses.
Sylvia awakens in a small vine-woven room, inexplicably healed, wearing a linen gown. Beside her lies the rotting corpse of the soldier she killed, with a sesame candy on his chest—an evident taunt. Jeru and Vaun admit Arin, who dismisses them, leaving Sylvia and Arin alone.
Sylvia first asks about Fairel; Arin confirms she lives. He states Sylvia’s magic saved and knit her back together, and notes she speaks of her magic as if it has its own will. When Sylvia asks why she is still alive, Arin asserts her fate is his to decide, not Felix’s or her own, implying deliberate restraint.
Reasoning through Arin’s presence and the war maps, Sylvia concludes he is not in Mahair primarily for her. She deduces he is secretly hunting another Jasadi—or a group—while using the Alcalah Champion selection as cover, and that keeping her alive serves that pursuit. Leaning in, she states he needs her; Arin smiles, acknowledging her realization.
