Chapter Twenty-One
Overview
Sylvia arrives at Lukub’s Ivory Palace, rebuffing attendants as Sefa warns of the Sultanas’ deceptive history. At a tense audience, Sultana Vaida probes Sylvia’s past and desires until Arin intervenes. Later, in the gardens, Arin counsels strategy, confirms a risky Meridian Pass route, and mutual attraction surfaces as Sylvia prepares for the banquet.
Summary
Escorted to her room in the Ivory Palace, Sylvia dismisses attendants despite Sefa’s warning that Lukub prizes service. Sefa shares a grim tale of past Sultanas coercing river sacrifices, cautioning that Lukubi power is rooted in illusion and manipulation. Sylvia falls into a restless sleep and wakes late, hastily dressing in a revealing violet gown Sefa prepared.
Jeru rushes Sylvia to Sultana Vaida’s receiving room, where Arin and Vaida are already seated. Vaida greets Sylvia warmly but tests her with sharp curiosity and flirtation, pressing about lovers and status. Sylvia holds her ground until Arin pointedly intervenes, shifting the mood. Vaida relents, maintaining charm while closely observing Sylvia.
Afterward, Arin leads Sylvia to a palace garden, instructing her to appear relaxed and to let vetted attendants assist her in the future. He praises her restraint, warns that Vaida delights in provocation, and notes Vaida will not risk crossing him due to politics and shared history. Their conversation reveals a departure planned at twilight in two days via the dangerous Meridian Pass rather than the crowded merchant routes.
As they talk, cats intrude, and an unexpected current of attraction intensifies: Arin notices Sylvia’s Nizahl-colored dress; Sylvia studies his uncharacteristically elegant attire. Sylvia grapples with new desire and reflections on power in intimacy, recalling Gana’s words about “conquering the unconquerable.”
Arin admits no attendants are allowed in his quarters; he calls it an eccentricity. Disturbed by her own thoughts yet steadied by Arin’s counsel, Sylvia withdraws to prepare for the coming banquet, aware of Vaida’s scrutiny and the looming risks of the Meridian Pass.
