Chapter 47

Overview

Aris summons the God of Death and discovers Raker has reclaimed his divinity, having killed the God of War. Raker reveals his survival and asks Aris to join him by uniting their twin swords to topple the gods. Torn between longing and warnings, Aris kisses him, professes love, and then drives her blade through his heart.

Summary

Driven by the promise that killing the God of Death could restore her family, Aris bleeds her starlight blade and summons him. She is portaled to a vast silver hall of empty thrones and a riven door, where a corpse lies skewered before the throne crowned in black stone. Raker sits there with her sheathed sword at his lap and an emptied goblet of pure magic beside him.

Raker explains he slew the God of War, who had believed he killed the God of Death five years earlier. Before that attempt, Raker had hidden a shard of his soul on Stormside during the last Questral, awakening human after War’s attack; the goblet’s magic restored his divinity. Aris confronts him over lies, her lineage as Aris Agron, and the burning of her house. He denies setting the fire but admits knowing who she is.

Aris demands a duel. When she strikes, Raker’s godsword wrenches from the dead god’s chest into his hand. Their twin blades meet with cosmic resonance and a burst of blinding light, but Raker only blocks, easily overpowering her without striking back. He finally casts his sword aside, takes her face in his hands, and says he left to save her from himself.

Raker urges Aris to join him, claiming their two halves of one sword are meant to reunite and could shatter and claim all godswords, restoring balance by bringing the gods down. Aris recalls the Astral Queen’s warning even as old desire and loneliness surge. They kiss fiercely; he vows she will never be alone again.

Breathless, Aris whispers that she thinks she loves him—then she drives Stellaris through his heart, choosing her mission over his offer and ending the moment of fragile truce.
