Este’s forest nymphs lead Aris and Raker to a hidden, starless cave with a makeshift bed and a cleansing waterfall. Exhausted and raw after the City on Fire, Aris washes away ash and blood, steels herself for facing the gods tomorrow, and notes Raker’s silent, conflicted watchfulness.

Accepting the likelihood of death, Aris chooses desire over restraint and propositions Raker. Their longstanding hostility becomes a catalyst for a fierce, consensual encounter in which both try to hold power and deny vulnerability. The exchange becomes a contested truce: commands, challenges, and confessions (“I hate you”) frame their surrender to need.

As they yield, Aris’s faint silver markings glow brighter, hinting at peril and connection beyond simple attraction. They continue until both climax, then, against Raker’s own former rule, he kisses Aris—an intimacy he had vowed to withhold—signaling a crack in his emotional armor.

They fall asleep among the sheets, spent and marked by each other. When Aris wakes sore and exposed, Raker is gone. Worse, her sword is missing—taken by him.
