Overview
In the tunnels, a fire demon inflames irresistible desire between Aris and Harlan Raker, pushing them to the edge of intimacy. Summary
Aris and Harlan Raker, hiding in the mountain tunnels, are overcome by a sudden, scorching desire as Raker’s touch ignites Aris’s senses. Despite their history as enemies and Aris’s fear of revealing her markings, they give in, pressing closer as the heat builds, their restraint slipping.
Their encounter intensifies: Raker tears away Aris’s shirts with his eyes closed to avoid a fatal glance at her markings, and he handles her with need and care. Aris, wanting to feel him and to unmask him, inches toward lifting his mask even as the flames roar behind her.
At the brink, Raker drops Aris and blindly slashes overhead, extinguishing the fire and revealing the heat was from a lurking demon. He kills the creature in a single stroke and shoves Aris against the opposite wall, the cavern returning to cold darkness.
Raker then distances himself, declaring, “This was nothing. You are nothing. Don’t get close to me again,” before leaving. Shaken and humiliated, Aris dresses in the dark, blaming the demon’s influence but also resenting Raker’s denial. She follows at a distance, rebuilding her hatred as a shield.
