XLV Frank

Overview

Frank resolves to use his life-tied firewood to free Thanatos, accepting the cost Mars warned him about. Alcyoneus reveals the giants’ broader strategy—both camps will fall and the true war centers on Greece—while taunting Percy and trying to claim Hazel. Hazel refuses and charges the giant as Percy shields Frank.

Summary

Frank hears Thanatos’s credo—no fairness in death—and realizes the only way to break the chains is with his own life-tied firewood. Remembering Mars’s lesson about his mother’s sacrifice, Frank chooses duty over fear and asks Hazel for the bundled stick she has been safeguarding.

Alcyoneus strides forward with an army of Roman shades, mocks the heroes, and singles out Percy as a future trophy for Polybotes. Percy identifies himself as Greek, unsettling the shades, but the giant dismisses the distinction and boasts that the giants will crush both camps and uproot the gods at their source.

Alcyoneus claims Camp Jupiter is already under attack and that Porphyrion is preparing war in the ancient lands, implying Greece. He declares plans to replace Pluto and enslave Hazel to control the earth’s wealth, promising the trio a place in his deathless army once the Doors of Death remain open.

Frank holds to his plan despite Thanatos’s approval and the implied cost. Hazel refuses the giant’s offer, admits Frank is her best friend, and tosses him the life-stick. She claims the right to face the monster she once raised, while Percy agrees to shield Frank from the encircling shades.

As the standoff breaks, Hazel spurs Arion and charges Alcyoneus. Percy readies to hold the ghostly ranks at bay, and Frank prepares to burn the firewood to free Death, accepting the personal risk as the only path to victory.
