Overview
Rick Riordan’s The Blood of Olympus follows the final leg of the quest aboard the Argo II as seven demigods race toward Greece to stop Gaea’s awakening. Jason Grace, Piper McLean, Annabeth Chase, Percy Jackson, Leo Valdez, Hazel Levesque, and Frank Zhang must navigate old grudges among gods, giants, and spirits while the divide between Greek and Roman demigods threatens to become open war.
At the same time, Reyna Ramírez-Arellano, Nico di Angelo, and Coach Gleeson Hedge carry the Athena Parthenos toward Camp Half-Blood, hoping the statue can heal the rift before Octavian’s Roman forces attack. The novel centers on unity, sacrifice, identity, and trust: the heroes cannot win by strength alone, but only by reconciling divided loyalties and choosing one another under impossible pressure.

Jason Grace, Piper McLean, and Annabeth Chase begin the final push by infiltrating the ruins of Odysseus’s palace on Ithaca, where the ghosts of Penelope’s suitors have gathered under Gaea’s influence. Disguised by Hazel Levesque’s magic, they learn that the giants plan to awaken Gaea at the Acropolis in Athens, that the Straits of Corinth are a trap, and that Delphi and prophecy have been compromised. Jason is shaken when the ghostly remnant of his mother, Beryl Grace, appears and tries to lure him away from the quest, but Piper and Annabeth help him reject the illusion. The trio escapes after battle, though Jason is badly wounded by Michael Varus. Juno appears and directs them to sail around the Peloponnese, subdue Nike at Olympia, and seek Apollo and Artemis on Delos.
Meanwhile, Reyna Ramírez-Arellano, Nico di Angelo, and Coach Gleeson Hedge struggle to transport the Athena Parthenos by shadow-travel. They survive near-disasters at Vesuvius and Pompeii, where Gaea attacks through ash-spirits, and learn that Orion, Gaea’s relentless hunter, is pursuing them. Hades warns Nico that the group cannot defeat Orion directly and must outrun him. In Portugal they are ambushed by Lycaon and werewolves, but Nico kills Lycaon with silver and uses the wolf king’s shadow to escape. Their journey brings them through San Juan, where Reyna is taken by the Hunters of Artemis and reunited with her sister Hylla, queen of the Amazons. The Amazons and Hunters try to trap Orion, but he massacres many defenders. Reyna realizes he is tracking her rather than the hidden statue, and Hylla holds him off so Reyna, Nico, and Hedge can continue.
At Olympia, Leo Valdez, Percy Jackson, Frank Zhang, and Hazel confront Nike, whose split Greek and Roman aspects are worsening the rivalry between the camps. Nike forces them into a deadly contest, but Hazel reshapes the stadium with Mist and Labyrinth-like obstacles while the others destroy her Nikai. Leo traps Nike in a Celestial bronze net. Before being gagged, Nike warns that one of them will die fighting Gaea and points them toward the physician’s cure, which requires poison from Pylos, a chained god’s heartbeat in Sparta, and a curse from Delos.
The crew gathers the Pylosian mint poison through Frank’s distant kin, then Piper and Annabeth descend beneath Sparta to a Temple of Fear. There they find a chained bronze statue of Ares with a metallic heartbeat and face the giant Mimas. Piper learns to act through fear rather than suppress it, decapitates the statue, and releases the makhai, battle spirits that promise to answer her once. Piper and Annabeth kill Mimas as the shrine collapses. Later, Jason and Percy face another crisis when Kymopoleia, storm goddess and resentful daughter of Poseidon, nearly sinks the Argo II. Jason persuades her to abandon Gaea by promising honor for minor gods at both camps, and together they kill the giant Polybotes. Kymopoleia hints that Gaea can be defeated by separating her from the earth, as Ouranos was once brought down.
On Delos, Leo, Hazel, and Frank find Apollo and Artemis stranded by the gods’ Greek-Roman schism and Zeus’s anger. Apollo reveals that Python has taken Delphi and that Octavian manipulated him into supporting Roman aggression. Leo bargains with Apollo, trading a new instrument for the Delos flower and directions to Asclepius. Hazel and Frank learn that Octavian’s Cyclops-built onagers will soon be able to destroy Camp Half-Blood. Leo privately explains a sacrificial plan based on the cure and the need to keep Gaea away from the earth. At Epidaurus, Leo, Piper, and Jason reach Asclepius, who makes the physician’s cure from the Pylosian mint, the Delos flower, and the makhai. The cure can revive only one person if used immediately after death. Piper is chosen to carry it, but Leo secretly keeps the real vial, replacing it with a Mist illusion and installing the cure into Festus and the Argo II for his own plan.
Reyna’s party finally reaches Long Island with the Athena Parthenos. Octavian’s forces have surrounded Camp Half-Blood, but Tyson and Ella help Reyna avoid arrest by Michael Kahale. Reyna sends Hedge to warn the Greeks and Nico with Dakota and Leila to sabotage the onagers. Orion attacks the yacht carrying the statue, wounding Blackjack and planting an explosive. Reyna invokes Bellona, shields her allies, and receives Athena’s aegis through the Athena Parthenos. Empowered, she strangles Orion with her transformed cloak and saves the mission, though the Roman onagers begin firing soon afterward.
In Athens, Piper, Percy, and Annabeth use Kekrops’s tunnels to enter the Acropolis and sabotage siege engines, but Percy and Annabeth are captured for Porphyrion’s blood sacrifice. Piper interrupts the ritual, wounds several giants, and buys time until Jason, Frank, and Hazel arrive. The Argo II attacks from above, but the giants recover, cripple the ship, and force the demigods into a defensive ring. A drop of Percy’s blood hits the stones, awakening Gaea. At that moment the Olympian gods arrive, reunited by the Athena Parthenos. Each demigod fights beside divine allies, and Jason and Zeus destroy Porphyrion. The giants are defeated, but Zeus punishes Apollo and refuses to help against Gaea directly, since prophecy says the seven must face her themselves. Zeus hurls the damaged Argo II toward Camp Half-Blood for a final confrontation.
At Camp Half-Blood, Nico, Will Solace, Lou Ellen, Cecil, Dakota, and Leila sabotage Octavian’s onagers. Reyna arrives with the Athena Parthenos and declares peace, calming Greeks and Romans long enough for them to unite. Gaea rises from the earth and begins swallowing fighters, but Leo returns on a rebuilt Festus, snatches her into the sky, and calls Jason and Piper to help. Jason uses storm winds to keep Gaea airborne, while Piper charmspeaks her into sleep. Leo sends his friends away and unleashes his fire. At the same time, Octavian, obsessed with glory, launches himself with an Imperial-gold payload from an onager; the projectile becomes the comet that meets Festus’s blaze. The explosion disperses Gaea, but Leo and Festus vanish.
Afterward, Greeks and Romans mourn their dead and formalize peace. Grover confirms that Gaea’s presence has faded from nature. Hazel and Frank reveal Leo’s deception with the cure, and the others grieve his apparent sacrifice. Nico chooses to remain at Camp Half-Blood, accepts friendship and care from Will, and finds closure by telling Percy about his former crush. Piper and Reyna become true friends, and Piper and Jason choose a fresh start while deciding to believe Leo survived. Their hope is justified: Leo awakens midair after Festus injects the physician’s cure. He lands on Ogygia, reunites with Calypso, and leaves the island with her on Festus, setting out toward an uncertain but hopeful future.

Themes
Rick Riordan’s The Blood of Olympus brings the Heroes of Olympus saga to a close by insisting that victory is not a matter of one champion triumphing, but of divided people learning to trust one another. Its central themes turn on unity, sacrifice, identity, and the healing of old wounds.
- Unity over rivalry: The Greek-Roman split drives nearly every crisis. Nike’s madness at Olympia literalizes the danger of absolute victory: she demands Greeks versus Romans until Leo, Percy, Frank, and Hazel survive by pretending to compete while actually cooperating. The Athena Parthenos becomes the book’s great symbol of reconciliation. Reyna, Nico, and Coach Hedge carry it across impossible distances, and when Reyna delivers it to Camp Half-Blood, its golden warmth helps Greeks and Romans form a single line against Gaea.
- Chosen family and belonging: Several characters must reject isolation or inherited shame. Jason resists the ghostly lure of his mother Beryl and declares himself both Greek and Roman, defining home through loyalty rather than blood. Nico’s arc is even more intimate: after years of secrecy and self-exile, he is accepted by Reyna, Hedge, Jason, Hazel, and Will. His decision to stay at Camp Half-Blood and openly tell Percy about his former crush marks a quiet but profound victory.
- Sacrifice and leadership: The novel repeatedly asks what leaders owe others. Reyna risks herself against Orion and carries the burden of peace when her own camp brands her a traitor. Leo’s hidden plan with the physician’s cure culminates in his fiery self-sacrifice against Gaea, though Riordan softens tragedy with his resurrection and reunion with Calypso. True heroism here is not glory, but taking on pain so others may live.
- Healing trauma and confronting fear: Piper and Annabeth’s descent beneath Sparta makes fear itself the enemy; Piper succeeds by admitting terror rather than denying it. Reyna’s confession about her father, Jason’s wound from Varus, Percy’s guilt over Tartarus, and Nico’s near-fading all show that survival requires emotional honesty as much as combat skill.
- Respect for the overlooked: Jason’s promise to honor minor gods, beginning with Kymopoleia, broadens the book’s moral vision. Neglect breeds resentment; recognition creates allies. The final peace depends on making room for those pushed aside.
Together these themes make the finale less about defeating Gaea than about remaking a fractured world into one where gods, demigods, and former outsiders can belong.
