Overview

Jason confronts the ghost of his mother, Beryl Grace, whose manic remnant tries to seduce him into betraying the quest. Piper and Annabeth snap him out of the enchantment, while Varus and Antinous press him to switch sides. Jason learns Gaea has dispatched an unstoppable hunter after Reyna, Nico, and Hedge, then rejects Beryl and readies for battle.

Summary

Jason’s Mist disguise burns away when the ghost of his mother, Beryl Grace, appears. Her familiar look and voice regress Jason to childhood, overwhelming him with longing and confusion as the suitors and undead watch for entertainment. Michael Varus claims Gaea preserved Beryl and urges Jason to embrace her.

Piper commands Jason to focus, warning that Beryl’s voice is dangerously manipulative. Annabeth identifies the apparition as only a remnant. Beryl blames the gods for abandoning her and tempts Jason with promises of family, power, and safety if he joins the suitors. Varus questions Jason’s loyalties and home, trying to isolate him.

Piper’s charmspeak sows distrust among the suitors, turning them on each other. Beryl reveals Gaea knows about Reyna, Nico, and Hedge transporting the Athena Parthenos, and has sent her most dangerous son—the hunter who never rests—to kill them. Jason realizes he must warn his friends and survive this trap.

Jason challenges the truth of the apparition, recognizing Beryl as a mania sustained by desperate desires for youth and life. Remembering his values and chosen family, he declares himself a child of both Greece and Rome, not of Beryl’s legacy. He wards off the evil, dispersing her ghost.

With the enchantment broken, Antinous contemptuously orders Jason’s death as the ghouls and ghosts close in, setting the stage for the fight.
