VIII Hazel

At the noisy mess hall, aurae serve food as Hazel eats gumbo and Percy discovers blue soda that feels familiar. The Fifth Cohort sits at the back with Hazel, Frank, Percy, Nico, and centurion Dakota. Nico sidesteps Percy’s questions about knowing him, while Dakota recalls sponsoring Hazel and her saving him from a unicorn stampede.

Hazel minimizes the incident, hiding that she guided the unicorns by their precious-metal horns. Conversation turns to Hazel and Nico’s sibling bond as children of Pluto; Nico admits another sister died and chose rebirth. Don the faun barges in, sniffing out a faint, suppressed empathy link on Percy, but Nico hustles Don, Vitellius the Lar, and Dakota away to the praetor’s table.

Frank explains Dakota is a son of Bacchus addicted to red Kool-Aid. The trio discuss demigod ADHD/dyslexia, and Hazel almost slips about being from another era. Percy asks why the Fifth is disfavored; Hazel admits her cavalry leanings and Pluto parentage don’t help, while Frank feels miscast as a swordsman despite archery talent.

They outline the cohort’s disgrace: the legion’s golden eagle—source of power and morale—was lost in an Alaska expedition during the 1980s under Fifth Cohort praetor Michael Varus, who pursued a prophecy before its time. The Fifth was decimated; survivors were traumatized; since then, camp defenses and spirits have weakened.

Hazel notes Jason once rebuilt the Fifth’s reputation before disappearing. Percy, familiar with being an underdog, vows to help turn things around. A horn sounds; Reyna announces the war games. The Fifth, assigned as attackers with the elephant, heads out despite their reputation for losing.
