Overview

At the Bone Palace arena, Galva refuses to kill the starved tiger, Jubel, calming her instead. When the ringmaster strikes Galva to force blood, Galva topples him from his camel and Jubel kills him. The crowd’s delight renders the transgression acceptable, elevating Galva’s legend and exposing the palace’s cruel spectacle culture.

Summary

Kinch recounts another visit to the Palace of Bones with the royal entourage. After Galva swiftly butchering an Erydoni gladiator, the master of ceremonies seeks a greater thrill and releases Jubel, an aging, mistreated tiger famed for killing many in the ring. The audience expects a slaughter; Kinch and Princess Renata watch from the stands.

As Jubel stalks closer, Galva unexpectedly sets down her sword and lowers her shield. She calmly signals the tiger, who sits and then rolls to present her belly. Galva rubs Jubel’s belly, transforming the anticipated bloodbath into play, stunning and delighting the crowd.

Humiliated, the ringmaster rides in on a camel and orders Galva to fight, even striking her with his spear butt. Galva rises from her ready kneel, evades the spear, and leaps to the camel, wrenching the ringmaster from the saddle.

Jubel seizes the opportunity and kills the ringmaster to a roar of approval from the stands. Though striking a master would normally mean gruesome death, the Bone Palace’s unwritten rule—anything is permitted if it entertains—protects Galva. Kinch savors the reversal as “whiskey and cake,” and Galva’s stature in the arena soars.
