11. One Goes On
Overview
Kinch and Galva enter a radiant cavern housing a three-headed, six-armed god. The deity multiplies both into three copies, then destroys one pair and ejects another. Kinch casts the sentient Book into divine fire, freeing Filaine’s soul. The god spares the remaining Kinch and Galva, declaring, “ONE GOES ON.”
Summary
Kinch and Galva discover a vast chamber lit without lamps, dominated by a thirty-foot statue with three heads and six arms. The presence is palpable and oppressive. The god speaks in three voices; Kinch hears it beyond language while Galva hears Ispanthian. When the deity demands agreement without terms, Galva accepts as the light threatens to vanish.
A searing transformation follows: both are briefly merged with immense, cosmic sensation, then split into three identical Kinches and three identical Galvas, each fully equipped. The statue, now rough and devilish, steps from the wall and hurls one Kinch and one Galva into a triangular fire, annihilating them as it pronounces, “ONE IS DESTROYED.” It then flings another pair through the stone, accompanied by a wisp of snow: “ONE GOES BACK.”
Facing the god, the last Kinch impulsively throws the shackled Book of the Full Shadow into the divine fire. The Book resists, screams, then collapses; Kinch senses Filaine’s soul released in its unmaking. Throughout, the god shows no interest in the Book, focusing only on its own design for the mortals.
The deity seizes the surviving Kinch and Galva and, with crushing finality, declares their fate: “ONE GOES ON.” The chapter ends with the Book destroyed, one pair dead, one expelled, and the remaining Kinch and Galva chosen to continue under the god’s inscrutable will.
