38. The Revelation

Overview

At the Ceremony of Apocalypse, Kinch’s secret plan triggers a massacre: his dung-smeared Murder Alphabet on the rising “godwords” kills literate spectators, including the king. The crowd collapses, cloud-ships drift leaderless, and the city quakes. Kinch spares Princess Renata by blocking her view, but Queen Neffa suspects him and knocks him unconscious.

Summary

During the Ceremony of Apocalypse, Kinch observes the Erydoni king, the Praxeter’s sermon, and Princess Renata’s teasing, all while struggling with exhaustion and dread. The stands are full, the cloud-ships hover, and the people await Thumos’s monthly “godwords.”

A flashback reveals Kinch’s sleepless night: he infiltrated the Halfmoon, reached the under-stage where kynd slave children smeared flammable putty into pre-baked clay “godwords,” and then, by lamp-light, used hillox dung and a shovel’s back to scrawl an insult in the Murder Alphabet between the lines.

As the tablet rises, Kinch urgently prevents Princess Renata from looking. A vast gasp becomes the thudding collapse of bodies: literate spectators, guards, and the king die instantly upon reading. One cloud-ship bumps another while a third drifts, pilotless. The revealed text shows Thumos’s moralizing lines, interlaced with Kinch’s lethal insult.

Horror and guilt seize Kinch as he realizes he has slain thousands. Queen Neffa, who shielded her daughters after hearing Kinch’s warning, demands to know how he knew. She strikes him, tenderly fixes the dead king’s wig and tongue, then kicks Kinch unconscious as the earth rumbles like an awakening god.

Who Appears

  • Kinch
Narrator; secretly writes Murder Alphabet on the tablet, causing mass deaths; protects Renata; is beaten unconscious by the queen.
  • Queen Neffa
Freshly widowed queen; shields her daughters, confronts Kinch, restores the king’s dignity, then floors Kinch with a kick.
  • Princess Renata
Flirtatious, sharp-tongued princess; Kinch blocks her view and even pokes her eyes to save her from the lethal text.
  • King of the Half-Giants
Benevolent-seeming ruler; dies upon reading the tablet; his fall signals the catastrophe.
  • The Praxeter
High priest leading the ceremony; his staged godwords are subverted by Kinch’s lethal additions.
  • Kynd slave children
Under-stage workers smearing flammable putty into letters, enabling the godwords illusion.
