In the apothecary, they uncover a skeleton still holding a scalpel, reviving wounds over the hospital’s destruction. Nahri demands truth; Ali urges leaving the past buried to enable a fresh start.
Summary
Two weeks after a fraught family breakfast, Nahri practices sleight of hand with Razu at the ruined hospital while Elashia quietly carves and animates a turtle. Ali and Doctor Subhashini Sen arrive: Ali enthusiastic with plans and notes, Subha wary and curt. They review layouts and discuss keeping a healing garden, but the mood remains strained.
Walking toward the surgical wing, Subha doubts the six-month timeline as Ali touts funding and jobs. The wing’s brass wall is melted shut and partly collapsed; Ali climbs and reports a flooded basement and many snakes. As they wait, Subha softens discussing her infant, and she and Nahri share hard truths about grief, detachment, and the primacy of work.
Nahri asks about therapies for a friend with spinal injuries—her new apprentice, the grand wazir’s son. Subha offers to examine him. They proceed to the apothecary, where Subha reveals shafit magic by conjuring flame. Among rusted drawers, Nahri uncovers a buried scalpel—and a skeletal hand still gripping it—confirming deaths within the hospital during the war.
Shaken, Subha condemns attacking a place of healing. Ali suggests the story may be more complicated, provoking Nahri’s anger over justifications for past atrocities. Nahri covers the bones with her chador, intending proper rites. When she presses Ali for the truth, he withholds details and argues that if they seek a new beginning, the past here should remain buried, leaving their partnership strained but the project still alive.
