Overview
Nahri awakens injured in a marsh and finds Ali unstable under Suleiman’s seal. He panics over Daevabad’s peril and begs to return. Climbing a ruined minaret, they realize they have emerged beside the Nile opposite the Pyramids—back in Cairo. The shift strands them in the human world, resetting their next moves.
Summary
Nahri regains consciousness in pain, mired in a muddy marsh under a punishing sun. Her healing feels dulled as she stumbles through ruined structures and an abandoned mosque, searching for Ali.
She finds Ali atop a broken minaret, feverish, trembling, and unable to control Suleiman’s seal blazing on his temple. Ali begs Nahri to take them back, terrified for Daevabad and especially for his sister, Zaynab. He blames the ring and the flight from the lake as his body spasms under the seal’s power.
Nahri denies moving them anywhere, but when Ali points outward, she looks to the horizon and recognizes a sprawling, ancient cityscape: stone mosques, old forts, and dense brown neighborhoods along a wide river. The scene unlocks her memory and identity.
Across the river stand the Pyramids of Giza. Overcome, Nahri realizes they are in Egypt—Cairo—by the Nile. She whispers her homecoming as the Egyptian sun and river silt confirm the impossible return, leaving them marooned in the human world while Daevabad’s fate hangs unresolved.
