Chapter 15: Ali

Ali escorts Nahri to Sukariyya Street, where a watched red-doored house hides a shafit clinic. Nahri feigns pregnancy to gain entry. Inside, they find Doctor Subhashini Sen performing cataract surgery with practiced precision, aided by her husband Parimal and doorman Manka, while their infant cries in the background.

After the procedure, Subha confronts the intruders, recognizing Ali and Nahri. Nahri probes Subha’s training and discovers a trove of medical texts from Subha’s human-world–trained father, now deceased. Tensions spike when Nahri uncovers a pistol; Ali warns of the deadly risk and harsh penalties, revealing shafit desperation and the danger they face.

Nahri offers herbs and proposes collaborating on a bold plan: restore the prewar Nahid hospital and open it to all, regardless of blood. Subha challenges Nahri’s sincerity, invoking Nahid persecution of shafit and demands a public renunciation—then dismisses the plan as impossible under king and priestly opposition. Pressed about treating shafit with Nahid magic, Nahri hesitates and suggests treating Daevas first, deepening Subha’s distrust.

Ali intervenes, arguing the idea could unite communities and benefit Daevabad, but admits past failures that cost shafit most. Parimal notes Subha’s father dreamed of such a hospital. Ali offers administrative help and funding pathways, invoking the debt Nahri says he owes her. Subha sets firm conditions: obtain the king’s permission, secure funds, and bring real plans—or stay away to protect her family.

Ali and Nahri depart unsettled. Outside, Nahri insists their cooperation doesn’t restore their friendship. They agree the next step is approaching Ali’s family for approval, their uneasy alliance forged amid distrust and high stakes.
