CHAPTER 2: THE SHADOW OF THE PAST

In the Shire, Bilbo’s disappearance becomes legend while Frodo maintains odd habits and celebrates Bilbo’s birthdays. Strange rumors spread of Elves departing and dwarves fleeing unrest. In the Green Dragon, Sam Gamgee debates Ted Sandyman about uncanny sightings and the westward-going Elves.

After years absent, Gandalf returns to Bag End. He warns that Frodo’s ring is perilous and explains the Great Rings’ corrupting power. Gandalf throws the ring into the fire; fiery letters appear, proving it is the One Ring. He outlines Sauron’s return to Mordor and how the One would command all other Rings if recovered.

Gandalf recounts the Ring’s history: Sauron forged it; Isildur cut it from Sauron’s hand and later lost it in Anduin. Ages later Déagol found it; Sméagol (Gollum) murdered him and was twisted by its power, retreating under the mountains. The Ring abandoned Gollum and came to Bilbo by seeming chance.

Gandalf tells of tracking Gollum with Aragorn, learning Gollum reached Mordor and revealed hints about “Baggins” and the Shire. Sauron now knows the One is found and seeks the Shire. Frodo, frightened, wishes the Ring had never come, but Gandalf counsels pity and warns that the Ring cannot be destroyed except in Orodruin.

Frodo resists destroying or surrendering the Ring and accepts he must keep and guard it. Realizing he endangers his neighbors, Frodo decides to leave the Shire and his name, travelling as Mr. Underhill. Gandalf advises caution in choosing companions.

Gandalf catches Sam eavesdropping. Moved by Sam’s love of Elves and loyalty to Frodo, Gandalf decrees that Sam will accompany Frodo. Sam, overjoyed and tearful, accepts, setting the first steps of the journey.
