CHAPTER 5: A CONSPIRACY UNMASKED

Overview

Frodo, Sam, and Pippin cross into Buckland, glimpsing a Black Rider at the ferry, and arrive at Frodo’s house in Crickhollow. Merry, Pippin, and Sam reveal their planned "conspiracy" to accompany Frodo and their knowledge of the Ring.

They decide to depart at first light through the Old Forest to evade pursuit, while Fredegar Bolger remains to maintain appearances and inform Gandalf.

Summary

Frodo, Sam, Pippin, and Merry ferry across the Brandywine into Buckland. As they leave the west bank, Sam spots a dark figure moving on the far landing, convincing Frodo they are being followed. They hurry to Frodo’s secluded house at Crickhollow, where Fatty Bolger welcomes them.

After baths, supper, and Pippin’s recounting of their journey from Hobbiton, Merry presses Frodo to explain the danger. Merry then reveals the friends’ “conspiracy”: they have long suspected Frodo’s plan to leave, have been watching, and intend to go with him. Merry discloses he has known of Bilbo’s Ring since before the Party, having once seen Bilbo vanish and later glimpsed Bilbo’s secret book. Sam admits to gathering information and pledges unwavering loyalty.

Frodo protests but, moved by their devotion and Gildor’s advice, accepts their companionship. Merry confirms preparations are complete: five ponies, gear, and supplies are ready. They weigh the risk of Black Riders entering Buckland and decide not to wait for Gandalf.

Frodo resolves to depart at first light by an unexpected route: through the Old Forest, despite its grim tales, to avoid the watched roads and bridge. Fredegar Bolger, unwilling to leave the Shire, will stay to maintain the illusion that Frodo resides at Crickhollow and to inform Gandalf of their path if he arrives.

With the plan set, they finish packing and retire. Frodo, unable to sleep, dreams of a dark wood giving way to a heath and a tall white tower above the distant sound of the Sea, before thunder breaks the vision.
