CHAPTER 6: LOTHLÓRIEN

Aragorn rallies the Fellowship after Gandalf’s fall, urging haste from Dimrill Dale. Gimli leads Frodo and Sam to Mirrormere and Durin’s Stone. They follow the Silverlode south. Aragorn tends Sam’s orc-cut with athelas and reveals Frodo’s mithril coat, whose strength saved him in Moria, then presses onward into evening.

As night deepens, Frodo hears furtive steps and glimpses pale eyes behind them. The Company reaches the eaves of Lothlórien. Despite Boromir’s misgivings, Aragorn insists this is their only safe road. At the stream Nimrodel, Legolas sings of Nimrodel and Amroth, and Aragorn adopts the Galadhrim custom to rest in the trees.

Elven wardens led by Haldir discover them, offering refuge but objecting to Gimli. On Legolas’s and Aragorn’s word, Haldir permits Gimli only under strict watch and orders the Company to the talans. In the night, orcs pass beneath, lured away by the wardens; a wary, climbing creature approaches and flees—neither elf nor orc.

At dawn Haldir guides them south. Using rope-ways, they cross Silverlode into the Naith. Haldir demands Gimli be blindfolded; Aragorn resolves the standoff by having all blindfolded to preserve unity. As they march, Haldir laments growing shadows and the Elves’ isolation. Later, news arrives: the orcs are destroyed, the strange tracker has slipped away, and the Lord and Lady grant free passage; the blindfolds are removed.

Haldir brings them to Cerin Amroth, the ancient heart of Lórien, where elanor and niphredil bloom. Frodo and Sam feel Lórien’s undimmed light, as if in the Elder Days. From the high flet, Haldir points to fair Caras Galadhon and, across Anduin, the dark power of Dol Guldur. At the hill’s foot, Aragorn, caught in memory, speaks Elvish to an unseen beloved, revealing his bond to this place before leading Frodo on.
