CHAPTER 8: FOG ON THE BARROW-DOWNS

At dawn the hobbits prepare to leave Tom Bombadil’s house. Goldberry appears on the hill, bids them keep to their purpose, and sends them northward with a blessing. They travel across treeless downs under a hot sky, pause at noon by a standing stone, and, lulled by warmth and food, fall into an unintended sleep.

They wake encircled by cold fog and, disliking the hollow, try to reach the northern gap. In the mist Frodo passes between two great stones, is separated from his friends, and, after chasing faint cries, reaches a barrow. A Barrow-wight overpowers him, and he awakens imprisoned with Sam, Merry, and Pippin laid in white with treasure and a sword across their throats while a deathly incantation rises.

Tempted to use the Ring to escape alone, Frodo instead chooses loyalty. He severs the wight’s groping hand with a short blade, then, in darkness, recalls Tom’s rhyme and calls for help. Tom arrives, breaks open the barrow with song, banishes the wight, and brings the hobbits into daylight, waking them from the spell.

Tom piles the barrow’s treasure atop the mound to break its enchantment, keeping only a blue-stoned brooch for Goldberry, and gifts each hobbit an ancient Westernesse dagger. He retrieves their ponies with the help of his own, Fatty Lumpkin, and restores their spirits with food and cheer.

Guiding them across old borders and open land, Tom leads them back to the East–West Road. At dusk he directs them to Bree and The Prancing Pony but refuses to go farther, saying his country ends there. After farewells, Frodo warns his friends to use the alias “Mr. Underhill,” and they ride toward the lights of Bree.
