Chapter Twenty-Nine
Overview
Alaric and Talasyn hike alone into the Belian jungle to train at the Lightweaver shrine ruins, and a harrowing encounter with a swamp buffalo breaks the hostile tension between them—prompting Talasyn's first genuine laugh in Alaric's presence. Over lunch by a stream, they reach a fragile truce: Alaric apologizes for his behavior on the Deliverance, Talasyn reciprocates, and both agree to stop relitigating the war. Far from his father's influence, Alaric feels a growing, unsettling attraction he struggles to suppress.
Summary
Alaric and Talasyn set out together—without their respective guards—to hike through the Belian mountain range toward the ruins of the Lightweaver shrine. The arrangement was a compromise: Alaric refused to be outnumbered by Dominion soldiers in the wilderness, and the Zahiya-lachis refused to entrust Talasyn to two Kesathese Shadowforged. Their mission is to train at the shrine and hopefully witness the Light Sever discharging so Talasyn can commune with it. Talasyn is still angry from their previous quarrels, while Alaric's anger has dulled after confirming her former Sardovian comrades aren't hiding in Nenavar. Despite her exhaustion from only four hours of sleep after her secret trip to Sigwad, Talasyn finds the jungle invigorating and feels lighter being away from the stifling Nenavarene court.
While crossing a narrow plank bridge over a deep, muddy pond, Alaric slips and falls in. Talasyn mocks him, but the situation turns dangerous when Alaric inadvertently steps on a massive swamp buffalo submerged in the water. The enraged beast charges, and despite both of them hurling magical weapons—light spears and shadow lances—the creature dodges everything with shocking agility. Alaric uses a creative shadow-chain technique to pull himself to shore, grabs Talasyn's wrist, and they flee together through the jungle. The swamp buffalo eventually gives up the chase, and both collapse against trees, gasping for breath.
When Talasyn turns to look at the mud-caked Alaric, she bursts into genuine, uncontrollable laughter—the first time she has ever smiled at him. Alaric is struck by the beauty and warmth of her laughter, privately wishing it won't be the last time. The shared experience breaks the tension between them considerably. They find a stream where Alaric washes off the mud while Talasyn prepares lunch. Over rice cakes and salted venison, they have their most civil conversation yet—discussing Kaptan Rapat, Sevraim's behavior, and their mutual distrust.
The conversation turns serious when Talasyn asks if Alaric truly trusts her enough to dismiss his guard. He says he trusts her common sense, and she promises not to do anything foolish despite her angry words from before. Alaric then offers a genuine apology for his behavior aboard the Deliverance, noting how liberating it feels to be so far from his father's influence. Talasyn, visibly surprised, accepts and reciprocates. They reach an unspoken agreement to stop rehashing the Hurricane Wars. As they eat together, Alaric finds himself increasingly distracted by Talasyn—her voracious eating style, her glistening lips—and forces himself to look away, aware of his growing attraction.
