Chapter Thirty-Eight

Overview

On their wedding night, Alaric and Talasyn's forced bed-sharing erupts into a brutal argument where each accuses the other of being a puppet to their respective authority figures. The fight culminates in an explosive, passionate physical encounter that both fully participate in, only for Talasyn to abruptly end it when reality reasserts itself—reminding them both that he is leaving for Kesath and they remain enemies bound by political obligation.

Summary

Alaric enters Talasyn's chambers on their wedding night after her lady-in-waiting Jie announces her readiness with barely concealed amusement. He takes in the feminine décor and is immediately struck by Talasyn in her sheer, lace-embroidered nightdress—though she is visibly embarrassed and furious about the outfit. They agree to share the bed since there are no extra bedding options and servants will check on them in the morning, though Alaric is deeply uncomfortable with the proximity.

Unable to sleep, Alaric asks about Talasyn's lessons. She reveals she is studying Urduja's brand of politics and implies disagreement. This sparks a vicious argument: Alaric accuses Talasyn of being a passive follower who does whatever her grandmother or Vela commands, wearing clothes she hates, staying caged in the palace, and never acting for herself. Talasyn fires back that Alaric is no different—living under Gaheris's thumb, parroting his father's lies about the Cataclysm, and serving as Night Emperor in name only. Alaric inadvertently admits Gaheris is his superior, and Talasyn seizes on this. Their argument escalates with both invoking the power dynamics of their marriage across Kesathese and Nenavarene customs.

The confrontation reaches a breaking point when Alaric lunges forward and kisses Talasyn. What begins as a furious, impulsive act quickly deepens into passionate intimacy. Talasyn initially raises her hand to slap him but instead cups his jaw, and they fall back onto the bed together. The kiss intensifies into full physical exploration: Alaric touches her through her nightdress, and they both acknowledge the overwhelming mutual desire. Their Lightweave and shadow magic seem to resonate with each other, adding a mystical dimension to the encounter.

Their intimacy escalates further. Alaric admits he lied when he previously said she was only beautiful when dressed up—confessing she is always beautiful. He touches her beneath her undergarments while she wraps her hand around him. He coaxes her to climax with tender reassurance, and she brings him to release as well. In the vulnerable aftermath, Alaric collapses against her and she holds him, stroking his hair as they catch their breath together.

Reality crashes back when Talasyn sees the Dominion insignia on the canopy and remembers the political stakes—Nenavar, Sardovia, Kesath. She stiffens and pushes Alaric away, telling him to get off. He initially looks confused and hurt but quickly retreats. Talasyn reminds him he is leaving tomorrow and declares they shouldn't have done what they did. Alaric opens his mouth as if to argue but instead nods in resignation. Talasyn retreats to the bathroom to clean up and tells him he is sleeping on the floor, slamming the door behind her.
