Chapter Thirty-Two
Overview
Alaric and Talasyn's passionate first kiss is interrupted when the Light Sever discharges. Talasyn enters the nexus point, relives formative memories—including her mother's voice and the fall of Lasthaven—and emerges able to conjure a full Nenavarene shield. That night, mutual vulnerability gives way to bitter confrontation as Talasyn remembers her lost friend Khaede and the war's cost, causing both to dismiss the kiss as meaningless and retreat behind walls of pride and guilt. They leave the mountain the next morning in painful silence.
Summary
Alaric and Talasyn's first kiss in the amphitheater deepens into an intense, passionate exchange. Neither has kissed anyone before, and the moment is raw, clumsy, and consuming. Their weapons extinguish simultaneously as they give in to desire, the kiss described as a continuation of their duel—angry, frenetic, and overwhelming. Their embrace is interrupted when the Light Sever in the courtyard's fountain suddenly discharges, sending a towering pillar of golden light skyward.
Talasyn races to the Light Sever, drawn by its pull. Despite her fear, Alaric reassures her, and she walks into the nexus point. Inside, she is immersed in pure Lightweave magic. The Sever unlocks vivid memories: her mother Hanan's lullaby, childhood hunger, her first aerial battle, Khaede's comfort, Sol's death, and the specter of Alaric at Lasthaven telling her "It's over." Strengthened by these recollections, Talasyn resolves to learn to shield and protect what she holds dear. She emerges glowing with golden light and successfully conjures a full Nenavarene-style shield for the first time—long, rectangular, and forked—a major breakthrough.
In the aftermath, Talasyn is horrified at herself for having kissed the Night Emperor. She spends the rest of the afternoon practicing shields while avoiding Alaric, and he awkwardly keeps his distance. That night in their bedrolls, they talk despite themselves. Alaric shares painful truths about his lonely childhood—his demanding father, his unhappy mother who could barely look at him—offering vulnerability in exchange for hers. Talasyn reciprocates, speaking of her loneliness on the streets and in the regiments, and the faint memory of her mother.
However, the intimacy shatters when Talasyn speaks of Khaede, her only friend, whom she lost after Lasthaven and fears dead. She reminds Alaric that his soldiers killed countless Sardovians. The accusation lands hard, and when Alaric tries to respond, she cuts him off. When he presses about their kiss, Talasyn dismisses it as an "aberration" caused by the heat of their duel. Alaric quickly agrees it meant nothing to him either, and though Talasyn is stung, she convinces herself she is the only one with real feelings. She privately condemns herself as a traitor.
The next morning, Alaric wakes angry and regretful. He recognizes on some level that Talasyn's pain is justified, but retreats behind his pride, telling himself that rulers don't grovel. He fears what further foolishness proximity to Talasyn might cause. When Talasyn silently packs up camp, declaring they got what they came for, he agrees to leave despite a sharp pang of loss.
