Chapter Thirty-One
Overview
After their embrace, Alaric and Talasyn share vulnerable conversation under the stars—he vows fidelity, she yearns for closeness—while Alaric secretly refuses Gaheris's aetherspace summons to protect his cover. When meditation training stalls, Alaric proposes sparring in an ancient amphitheater, where their exhilarating, evenly matched duel dissolves the boundary between combat and desire, culminating in their first kiss amid crossed blades and aether sparks.
Summary
The chapter opens in the immediate aftermath of Talasyn and Alaric's embrace at the Lightweaver shrine. As dusk falls, they slowly pull apart, both deeply affected but unable to articulate what happened. Talasyn awkwardly thanks Alaric for being a patient instructor, causing him to blush. They eat supper in stifling silence and eventually settle into their bedrolls, the awkwardness gradually easing as Alaric makes no move to discuss the hug.
Unable to sleep, they begin talking under the stars. Talasyn shares the Nenavarene myth of Bakun the World-Eater, the first dragon who devoured a moon out of grief after losing his beloved, the first Zahiya-lachis Iyaram. Alaric reveals he prefers the Continent's eclipse myth because it isn't about the loss of someone greatly loved—an admission Talasyn connects to his grief over his mother. The conversation shifts to their betrothal; Talasyn brings up Alaric's earlier insult about "better options," and he responds with unexpected sincerity, swearing that there are no other options and vowing she will never be dishonored. As they lie apart under the stars, Talasyn finds herself yearning to close the distance between them.
In the middle of the night, Alaric is pulled toward aetherspace by Gaheris's summons through the Shadowgate. Alaric deliberately blocks his father's call, unwilling to risk Talasyn discovering his ability to walk the In-Between, though he suspects there will be consequences. The next morning, Talasyn's training yields only weak, unsustained shields and accidental blast marks. Alaric, who has been exploring the ruins with scholarly curiosity, proposes sparring in an ancient amphitheater he discovered, hoping combat instincts will unlock her shielding ability.
They face off in the amphitheater, and the duel quickly escalates into an exhilarating, closely matched fight. Alaric recognizes in Talasyn a kindred hunger to prove herself, shaped by her harsh upbringing. Talasyn feels pure ecstasy in combat after months away from sparring. As the fight intensifies in close quarters, a misstep causes Talasyn to stumble into the crook of Alaric's arm. They end up locked together—her dagger at his throat, his sword at her chin—flushed, panting, and overwhelmed by physical proximity.
Alaric delivers a quiet, intimate lesson about defense: that sometimes one must take the blow and let it ring against one's defenses rather than always striking first. His shield vanishes and his gauntleted hand splays across her stomach. The tension between combat and desire reaches a breaking point. Looking up at him, Talasyn sees raw longing on his face. He murmurs "Your move, Lachis'ka," she whispers back "You first, Your Majesty," and they move simultaneously—their blades crossing as they lean into each other and kiss for the first time, surrounded by sparks of light and shadow.
