Chapter Thirty

Overview

Alaric and Talasyn spend a full day training at the Lightweaver shrine, their banter evolving into genuine camaraderie as Alaric reveals vulnerability about his grandfather and Talasyn grapples with her growing attraction. After hours of meditation and practice, Talasyn achieves a breakthrough by spinning her first light shield, and in the elation that follows, an impulsive embrace transforms into an intimate, mutual moment of physical and emotional connection that neither wants to end.

Summary

Alaric and Talasyn arrive at the Lightweaver shrine ruins at sunset. Talasyn explains the carved nature spirits and Nenavarene customs to Alaric, and he teases her about their upcoming marriage with a dry humor that flusters her. Throughout the day, Talasyn finds herself increasingly aware of Alaric's physical appearance—his undershirt revealing his muscular frame—and struggles with a growing attraction she believes is entirely one-sided, convinced he sees her as unappealing without courtly adornments.

They set up camp in the courtyard near the dormant Light Sever and the grandfather tree Alaric had felled months earlier. Over a breakfast of rice cakes and intensely strong Nenavarene coffee the next morning, their banter continues to deepen. Alaric admits he finds Talasyn's fearless honesty "interesting" compared to the deference he receives from everyone else. When Talasyn throws his earlier words back at him—that he liked her better when she was afraid—he echoes her own earlier apology: "I say things when I'm mad." Both suppress smiles.

Alaric begins Talasyn's training with extended breathing meditations and moving forms, keeping physical distance this time. As they practice side by side through the day, Talasyn achieves a profound connection with her magic, sensing every pathway of aether in her body, and feels a deep synchronicity with Alaric as they move in fluid tandem. Despite this breakthrough in meditation, she struggles all afternoon to spin a light shield.

At sunset, Alaric sits across from her and guides her verbally, his low voice walking her through constructing a shield in her mind, piece by piece. Drawing on her memory of forging her first knife and her motivation to protect both the Sardovians and Nenavarene, Talasyn finally produces a translucent shield of light magic. The shield dissolves when she loses concentration looking at Alaric's pleased, almost boyish expression, but both recognize the achievement. Alaric praises her warmly, calling her by her first name.

Overcome with gratitude and triumph, Talasyn impulsively throws her arms around Alaric's neck. She immediately tries to pull back in mortification, but Alaric presses his hand to her back and holds her against him. The embrace deepens as both surrender to it—Talasyn traces his arm, Alaric caresses her back and thigh—and they hold each other in mutual need and tenderness as the sun sets, neither willing to let go.
