Chapter 14

Overview

Evie’s missing journal becomes a fresh source of anxiety because it contains a compromising drawing of Evie kissing Trystan, prompting Rebecka to agree to help look for it. The chapter also reestablishes daily life at Massacre Manor after the group’s escape, with Keeley safely returned and the office functioning again.

The immediate tension shifts when Keeley reveals that Trystan has discovered Evie’s newest entryway decoration: Mr. Warsen’s severed head. This sets up a confrontation between Evie and Trystan over her impulsive, macabre decision.

Summary

The next morning, Trystan has asked Evie to meet him in Massacre Manor’s entryway, but Evie first goes to Rebecka Erring’s desk to beg for help finding her missing journal. Rebecka refuses at first, insisting Evie should buy a replacement if she lost it, but Evie insists the journal was on her desk and that someone must have taken it.

Rebecka realizes Evie is more worried than a normal lost work notebook would justify and asks what is inside it. Evie tries to claim it contains only work material, but Rebecka guesses there is an embarrassing drawing. Evie admits the journal includes a sketch of Evie and Trystan kissing, making the loss more mortifying and potentially risky.

Rebecka leads Evie to the kitchens while continuing the conversation. Evie notices Lyssa and Edwin working on chocolate batter and feels the comfort of familiar surroundings, especially the stained-glass window she likes. Rebecka agrees to help search for the journal, bluntly reassuring Evie that Evie’s drawings are so bad no one may recognize the subject anyway.

Evie instinctively moves to hug Rebecka in gratitude, but Rebecka stops her and coldly tells Evie to get away. Before Evie can leave, Keeley arrives and tells Evie that Trystan has just noticed Evie’s addition to the entryway: the newly displayed head of Mr. Warsen. Keeley warns that Trystan seems displeased, leaving Evie to realize she is in trouble.
