Chapter 83

Overview

Nura's return brings comfort but also a new complication: Benedict's prophecy requires four objects, and the final one remains unknown. Gideon reveals Evie never received the antidote that was supposed to wake her from sleeping death, meaning a mysterious second cure saved her and deepens the emotional stakes around Trystan.

Evie responds to the mounting uncertainty not with wishes, but with resolve. Her vow signals a sharper, more dangerous turn in her fight against Benedict, her father, and the pain Trystan has caused.

Summary

After returning with Nura Sage, the group agrees not to wake Lyssa until morning, giving the girl one more peaceful night before learning her mother is alive. Nura embraces Gideon while Tatianna examines Nura, and Evie believes they now have nearly everything needed for Rennedawn's Story: Trystan, the guvre youth, and the restored wishing starlight.

Nura corrects that assumption by revealing Benedict spoke of four objects, not three. Nura can name the Villain who was once kind, the youth of Fate's creatures, and the wishing starlight, but Nura cannot yet remember the fourth object because her time as a star left gaps in her memory.

Gideon offers to return to the Gleaming Palace and retrieve Benedict's book to learn the missing object, but Evie refuses because the danger is too great. Evie insists they will find another way to steal the book, rescue the female guvre, discover the fourth object, and fulfill the prophecy before Benedict can use it.

Trystan tells everyone to rest so they can begin again in the morning. As Trystan leaves, his hand brushes Evie's, and Trystan reacts as if the touch hurts him. Evie interprets the moment as a possible goodbye and looks out at the sky, where the brightest star Nura once was is gone.

Gideon then privately admits he failed to deliver the antidote to Evie after she ate the sleeping-death fruit because guards blocked him. Gideon gives Evie the unused antidote and tells Evie there are two cures, not one. Evie remembers the voice and kiss that called her back during death sleep, realizes some powerful second cure awakened her, suppresses the joy of that revelation, and makes a vow of wrath against the world, Benedict, her father, and Trystan Maverine.
