Chapter 70
Overview
Trystan reels from Evie’s kiss and privately accepts that he is in love with her, even as Evie frames the kiss as a successful combat distraction. Their charged training moment is abruptly broken when four Valiant Guards breach Fortis Fortress through the hidden veil. Trystan moves to protect Evie and unleashes his power, but the magic goes wrong, turning the romantic breakthrough into a dangerous cliffhanger.
Summary
From Trystan’s point of view, Evie Sage’s kiss immediately overwhelms him. Trystan tries to convince himself the moment might be a dream or part of the deadlands’ test, but Trystan recognizes Evie’s touch too clearly and realizes the effect Evie has on him is real.
Trystan responds for only a moment before forcing himself away and reaching for his sword, only to discover Evie now holds it. Evie explains that the kiss was a distraction, using Trystan’s own instruction not to think against him. Trystan tries to remain detached, but the moment confirms that Trystan is deeply in love with Evie.
Evie points out that the distraction worked, and Trystan acknowledges Evie’s success while suggesting they practice escape maneuvers that do not involve kissing. Before the charged exchange can continue, an unfamiliar voice interrupts them.
Four Valiant Guards in the king’s silver armor have entered Fortis Fortress through the hidden veil, weapons raised. Trystan immediately moves Evie behind him and summons his dark power, recognizing the men as enemies who have made him suffer.
Trystan smiles and prepares to strike, but when Trystan’s power flares outward, something goes terribly wrong. The chapter ends on the sudden failure or disruption of Trystan’s attack, leaving Evie and Trystan in immediate danger.
