Chapter 37

Overview

At Massacre Manor, Becky breaks up an intern brawl with startling combat skill, exposing that Becky is far more capable than Becky’s bureaucratic role suggests. Blade’s fierce defense of Becky reveals a protective, dangerous side to Blade, while Gideon recognizes Becky’s hidden identity and agrees to keep silent. The chapter shifts attention to Becky’s secret past and raises the stakes around what Becky could lose if that secret is exposed.

Summary

Back at Massacre Manor, Becky finds two male interns brawling in a hall while others cheer, throw food, and worsen the damage she will have to document. Furious at the mess and at their disobedience, Becky first orders everyone to stop, but the fight continues.

Deciding command is not enough, Becky tears her skirt for movement and physically intervenes. Using practiced skill and precision, she drops both fighters, then threatens to report everyone to Trystan and recommend punishments, including replacing their energizing cauldron brew. The interns immediately scatter to clean up.

Blade, who had tried to warn Becky away from the fight, is astonished by Becky’s combat ability and asks where Becky learned to fight. Becky deflects with a joke, but the moment is interrupted when Caden, one of the defeated interns, grabs Becky and insults Becky for ruining Caden’s chance at a promotion.

Blade instantly restrains Caden against a wall and forces Caden to apologize properly to Becky. Blade’s protective anger reveals a harsher side beneath Blade’s usual charm, and Blade threatens to feed Caden to Blade’s dragon if Caden ever speaks to Becky that way again.

Shaken by Blade’s reaction and by the attention drawn to Becky’s own abilities, Becky retreats toward the stairs. Gideon confronts Becky with the realization that he has recognized something about Becky’s true identity and implies that “Ms. Erring” is false. Becky warns Gideon to stay silent, and Gideon promises not to expose the secret, but Becky notices Blade misreading the exchange and accepts the misunderstanding because revealing the truth would destroy the life Becky has built.
