Chapter 25

Overview

California bursts with expertly cultivated abundance, yet market prices collapse, making harvest unprofitable. To protect profits, owners destroy crops, while small farmers go bankrupt and the hungry are denied food. Systemic waste amid need breeds grief and fury, foreshadowing collective wrath building among the dispossessed.

Summary

Spring in California yields extraordinary abundance: orchards and vineyards swell under the care of expert growers, chemists, and grafters. Their knowledge produces vast harvests—cherries, prunes, pears, and grapes—promising prosperity.

But prices collapse so low that picking and processing would lose money. Fruit drops and rots in the fields; wine is adulterated to salvage value; the air fills with decay. Smallholders drown in debt and are absorbed by banks and great owners who also control canneries.

To maintain prices, surpluses are deliberately destroyed: kerosene is sprayed on oranges, potatoes are dumped and guarded, pigs are slaughtered and buried, and coffee and corn are burned for fuel. The system can perfect seeds but cannot deliver food to the hungry.

Denied access as food is wasted before their eyes, the hungry witness the state-wide rot and feel a deepening sense of failure and injustice. Their grief hardens into anger; in their souls, the “grapes of wrath” ripen, signaling an impending reckoning.
