Chapter 3

Overview

A land turtle painstakingly climbs a highway embankment, survives a car strike that flips it, and perseveres onward. Along the way it crushes a biting ant and inadvertently plants seeds it carries. The episode underscores persistence through adversity and quiet continuity of life amid harsh roadside conditions.

Summary

On a sun-baked roadside, dry grasses brim with burrs and barbs designed to spread by wind and animals. Insects stir beneath the shade as a land turtle emerges, its shell scraping a trail through the tangle as it aims for the highway embankment ahead.

The turtle begins its climb. Hind legs push and slip while the neck stretches toward the crest. It reaches the road’s concrete shoulder, pauses, and snaps into its shell when a red ant intrudes. The ant is crushed between body and legs, and a head of wild oats becomes caught under a front limb.

Regaining motion, the turtle heaves onto the pavement and starts across the hot surface. A sedan driven by a forty-year-old woman swerves to avoid it, skidding briefly before continuing on. The turtle retracts, then resumes its determined crawl over the burning highway.

A light truck approaches; the driver swerves to hit the turtle, striking the shell’s edge and flipping it off the road. The turtle lies motionless, then labors on its back until a front foot hooks a piece of quartz and slowly levers the shell upright. In the tumble, the wild oat head falls, and several seeds stick into the earth.

As the turtle drags forward again, its shell scrapes dirt over the embedded seeds, covering them. It enters a dusty side road and continues, leaving a shallow, wavering trench behind while its old, humorous eyes keep fixed on the way ahead.
