Summary
Sylvia rebukes Gabriel after learning he has been secretly paying her wages until the Glass Library committee formalizes her post. Gabriel apologizes, claiming guilt and pragmatism, but Sylvia insists on professional distance despite conflicted feelings.
They visit painter Horatio’s modest flat. Pressed about Lady Stanhope, Horatio admits to a brief affair leveraged to secure his Academy exhibit and says she threatened to blacklist him when he ended it. He claims she similarly helped sculptor Freddie Duckworth and hints she would sack a butler who crossed her, reinforcing her coercive influence.
Gabriel then brings Sylvia to Freddie’s Bloomsbury mews. Surrounded by stark sculptures, Freddie confirms the admired seascape contains magic and explains that magicians can “sense” residual magical warmth. When Gabriel questions certainty about the stolen Delaroche’s enchantment, Freddie takes offense and ends the interview, though he maintains his professional judgment.
On the drive back, Sylvia decides to accept the temporary wage arrangement while keeping boundaries. A taut, near-intimate moment in the parked motor is shattered when Gabriel’s cousin Willie pounds on the door, urgently demanding Gabriel get out.
