Summary
Sylvia reinterprets the dust sheets and cigarette butts in Burlington House’s storeroom as proof Tommy Allan had been sleeping there. Returning with Gabe and Mr. Bolton, she finds the bedding covered and the butts disturbed, likely by rats, suggesting Tommy left days ago. The realization chills Sylvia and confirms Tommy remains a threat.
Outside, Gabe warns Sylvia she is in danger and urges her to move into his Park Street home. After initial reluctance, Sylvia agrees temporarily. That evening, she packs; her landlady, Mrs. Whitten, denounces her and bans her from returning. At Gabe’s house, the housekeeper, Mrs. Bristow, settles Sylvia into a guest room and gossips about Willie’s late husbands.
Sylvia overhears Willie arguing with Gabe and Alex about the impropriety of a young woman living with Gabe, fearing reputational consequences. Gabe insists he only feels guilt and denies romantic feelings. Hurt and worried she is compromising him, Sylvia prepares to leave.
Gabe intercepts Sylvia, learns she cannot return to her lodging house, and persuades her to stay for dinner to reassess.
