Chapter 18
Overview
Horatio confesses orchestrating the Delaroche theft with Bolton, using Sylvia’s coat to pass messages and confirming Bolton alone staged the Partridge attempt and caused Tommy Allan’s death. Police arrest Horatio, Daisy lashes out, and the case’s core facts settle. Later, Gabe admits secret lineage knowledge, mentions silversmith magician Marianne Folgate, and he and Sylvia cautiously mend their strained rapport.
Summary
Gabe confronts Horatio, bluffing that Bolton has confessed. Pressed, Horatio reveals he used Sylvia as an unwitting courier by slipping notes into her only coat, which Bolton checked while she worked. Horatio had maneuvered Sylvia into Bolton’s office by proposing her as Driscoll’s temporary replacement.
Horatio explains he and Bolton met at Passchendaele and later planned the thefts. Horatio targeted the Delaroche after seeing it at a lover’s home; Bolton verified its magic, hid the canvas, and retrieved Horatio’s note from Sylvia’s pocket to arrange the handoff. A second note set their payoff meeting.
On the Partridge seascape, Horatio admits Bolton acted alone and framed Tommy Allan when caught. He adds that Bolton met Allan at the docks after a blackmail note; during a confrontation, Bolton pushed Allan, who fell, hit his head, and went into the water. Daisy returns with police; after a stinging slap, Horatio is arrested, and Cyclops is briefed.
Afterward, Daisy comforts Sylvia and proposes Sylvia take Horatio’s soon-to-be-vacant flat by leveraging notoriety to reduce rent. Gabe escorts Sylvia to the library, but when she suggests a link between his public heroics and an attempted kidnapping, he brusquely denies it, and they part coolly.
That evening, Daisy urges Sylvia not to let fear of intimacy drive Gabe away. The next day at the Glass Library, Gabe brings doughnuts and apologizes: he withheld that he can access extensive records of magician lineages. He confirms no Ashe magician families and mentions one silversmith magician, Marianne Folgate, seen in London in 1891. Gabe wonders if Sylvia might be magical, citing her keen observations. A warm, awkward moment follows, lightened by Professor Nash; the trio joke about food magic as Sylvia embraces her role.
