Summary
In a rainy lane, Tommy Allan blocks Sylvia’s path, threatening her but stopping short of violence. He bitterly insists he is innocent of the thefts, rails against prejudice after the war, and says he overheard Ludlow telling Lady Stanhope to “cough up” or be exposed. Pressed about the attempted theft the previous night, Tommy claims he has a woman as an alibi but refuses to go to the police and leaves.
Shaken, Sylvia warms up at the Society library, then goes to Gabe’s to report. While waiting, Bristow brings tea, and Willie arrives bristling. Sylvia tries small talk about a silver magician; Willie denies knowledge and shows hostility. Prodded, Willie admits she distrusts Sylvia because she fears trouble and is fiercely protective of Gabe, whom she says changed after the war and is well matched with Ivy.
Gabe and Alex return. Sylvia relays Tommy’s alibi claim and the overheard quarrel: Ludlow demanding payment from Lady Stanhope, strengthening suspicion that Ludlow identified magical paintings for her. Willie and Alex report no useful movements. Despite Sylvia’s intention to leave, Gabe insists she stay for safety; Willie is displeased but yields.
After a quiet dinner without Ivy, Willie and Alex head to a jazz club while Gabe remains. He shows Sylvia his library and family travel journals.
