Chapter 2: Rhysand
Overview
Rhysand joins Cassian at Windhaven to force Devlon into allowing Illyrian girls to keep training despite Solstice preparations, exposing how little the camp's gendered traditions have changed after the war. Cassian then reveals a more dangerous problem: resentment is spreading among the Illyrians, who suspect Rhysand and Cassian sacrificed them out of old bitterness.
The chapter also turns inward, showing Rhysand's exhaustion, longing for Feyre, and fear that their happiness cannot last. Cassian steadies him, reinforcing their brotherhood while Rhysand resolves to bring the family together for Solstice despite Nesta's isolation and the political unrest brewing in the mountains.
Summary
Rhysand arrives at Windhaven in the Illyrian Mountains, where winter weather and daily camp routines highlight the old inequalities still governing Illyrian life. Warriors train, men who did not become warriors work trades, and females are expected to handle domestic labor, including Solstice preparations.
Cassian confronts Devlon because Devlon wants the girls excused from training so they can help prepare the holiday for the boys and men. Cassian insists the girls must still practice, and Rhysand supports him. After Devlon pushes back and uses war losses as an argument, Rhysand imposes a compromise: every girl will train for ninety minutes each morning, then everyone, including males, will help with preparations.
Inside the house the Night Court keeps at Windhaven, Cassian warns Rhysand that discontent is growing among the Illyrians. Some believe Rhysand and Cassian used the war to punish Illyrians for how they were treated as children, and Cassian fears the coming Solstice gathering will spread the resentment. Rhysand decides they must trace and stop the rumors peacefully, but he also insists Cassian come home to Velaris for Solstice rather than remain in the camp.
The conversation shifts to the Inner Circle and the holiday. Rhysand reveals that both of Feyre's sisters will be expected at the celebration, though Nesta remains withdrawn, unemployed, and distant from everyone. Cassian asks about Nesta but acknowledges that speaking with her might end in violence, while Rhysand wants the day protected for Feyre, whose birthday also falls on the Solstice.
Rhysand then confesses his deeper fear: Feyre is only twenty-one, and part of him worries their happiness and mating bond might be too good to last, or too much like the unhappy bond between his parents. Cassian reassures him that Feyre chose him freely, that they have already paid dearly, and that they deserve to enjoy the peace they are still working to preserve. The brothers embrace, and Rhysand leaves after thanking Cassian.
