Chapter 22: Feyre
Overview
Rhys takes Feyre to the cabin after Solstice and reveals that the gowns Feyre treasures were made by Rhys's mother for his future bride, turning the dresses into a profound family inheritance. Feyre then asks to bear permanent Night Court markings and gives Rhys her own gift: Feyre is ready to try for a child.
Their decision shifts their future from recovery after war toward building a family. The next morning, Rhys gives Feyre a ruined riverside estate and asks Feyre to design their home, including space for their loved ones and a nursery.
Summary
After the Solstice gathering winds down, Cassian returns brooding and Mor follows him with concern. Azriel remains with Elain in the sitting room while Elain shows him garden expansion plans using the gifts she received, and Feyre silently thanks Azriel for his kindness before Feyre and Rhys go upstairs.
Rhys stops Feyre from removing her diamond cuffs and winnows Feyre directly to the cabin for privacy. There, Rhys reveals that Feyre's favorite dresses, including the one Feyre is wearing, were made centuries ago by Rhys's mother as a trousseau for Rhys's future bride. Feyre is deeply moved, and Rhys says his mother would have loved Feyre.
Feyre asks Rhys to replace the eyes tattooed on Feyre's palms with the Night Court insignia: a mountain and three stars. Rhys warns that the new marks cannot be altered, but Feyre accepts because Feyre intends to remain with him. Before Rhys changes the tattoos, Feyre opens the mating bond and shows Rhys her final Solstice gift: Feyre wants them to stop preventing pregnancy and try for a child.
Rhys is overwhelmed and asks whether Feyre is certain. Feyre says Feyre does not want to wait, though both know conceiving might take years. Rhys changes Feyre's palms to the Night Court insignia, and the two spend the night together at the cabin, their intimacy charged by their bond and shared magic. Feyre keeps in mind the image of the blue-eyed, dark-haired boy the Bone Carver once showed her, seeing it as a promise of the future.
The next morning, Rhys brings Feyre not to the town house but to a ruined estate by the Sidra. Rhys reveals that he bought the property as Feyre's Solstice and birthday present and tells Feyre to rebuild it however Feyre wishes. Feyre is overwhelmed by the cost and scale of the gift, but Rhys insists it is not too much and invites Feyre to create a home with space for their family, their friends, Feyre's art, Elain's garden, and a nursery. Feyre promises to build it.
