Laurent
Overview
Laurent Aden meets Prosper Beck in a smuggler’s sea cave to complete a weapons transaction, confirming that Beck still operates in Castellane despite rumors of his departure. Laurent’s report of possible Malgasi soldiers using the caves introduces a new foreign military threat hidden inside the city’s criminal channels. Beck also probes Laurent’s ties to the Kutani princess and Artal Gremont, and Laurent’s condemnation of Artal reinforces Artal’s danger.
Summary
The chapter opens with the history of Castellane’s sea caves, which have long sheltered smugglers, pirates, and illegal trade. Their size comes partly from ancient battles and Sunderglass mining, and attempts to clear them have failed because commerce, bribery, and superstition protect the smugglers.
Laurent Aden has berthed his ship, the Black Rose, inside one of the largest caves. He waits on a makeshift sitting area on the dock with wine and glasses prepared, unwilling to go far from his vessel.
Prosper Beck arrives by small boat, and Laurent pretends surprise. Laurent notes that Beck has been absent from his usual headquarters and that several of Beck’s operatives seem to be working elsewhere, but Beck gives little explanation. Laurent confirms that he has kept Beck’s goods: thirty-six crossbows hidden beneath teakwood for House Raspail.
Before Beck leaves, Laurent warns Beck that Laurent’s men have seen foreign soldiers moving in and out of the caves. Laurent thinks they are Malgasi, which visibly surprises Beck and makes Beck privately thoughtful. Beck says his men will collect the crossbows later, then asks how long Laurent plans to stay in Castellane.
Beck suggests Laurent’s continued presence may have to do with a Princess from Kutani, catching Laurent off guard, though Laurent denies any concern of Beck’s. Beck then asks about Artal Gremont, whom Laurent brought to Castellane on the Black Rose. Laurent admits he transported Artal for money but calls him cruel, abusive, and dangerous, recalling Artal’s treatment of a stowaway. Beck thanks Laurent for the warning and departs, leaving Laurent alone with the bitter wine.
