CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
Overview
Kel and Lin both wake to the consequences of the previous disasters: Kel is trapped in the Trick under Falconet’s treason charges, while Lin is exiled from the Ashkar despite saving Mariam. Jolivet abandons Kel for political necessity, Mayesh is dismissed from the Palace, and Conor is left increasingly isolated among conspirators.
Lin tries to save Kel by appealing directly to Conor and confessing her love, but Conor interprets her and Kel’s secrecy as proof that love and trust make him vulnerable. The chapter ends with Conor banishing Lin from the Palace just as Lin insists she must reveal a truth about King Markus and Conor.
Summary
Kel wakes in La Trecherie, the Trick, sick and injured but alive behind Sunderglass bars. As memory returns, Kel understands that Falconet used Anjelica’s escape, Kel’s stolen belongings, and manipulated evidence to frame Kel as a murderer and traitor. Thinking through the plot, Kel realizes Falconet likely learned Kel could impersonate Conor, connected Kel to Cabrol’s confession, and removed both Cabrol and Kel because they threatened the conspiracy.
Lin wakes in the Black Mansion after three days unconscious. The Ragpicker King tells Lin that her gematry cured Mariam but tore loose with destructive force, burning part of the Sault wall and destroying an old temple in the Maze. Lin learns that the Maharam has declared Lin galut, no longer Ashkar, because the elders feared Lin’s power rather than accepting Lin as a sign of the Goddess. Andreyen returns the still-living Source-Stone and urges Lin to become a sorcerer, but Lin rejects further use of the power after losing the Sault, Mariam, Mayesh, and Conor.
Kel endures the boredom and terror of imprisonment, learning from guards that Anjelica safely escaped through the Narrow Pass. Jolivet visits Kel and admits he will not defend him, because revealing Kel’s secret investigation would expose what the Palace knows about the conspiracy. Kel argues that Jolivet could exile him instead, but Kel understands that Jolivet considers a compromised Sword Catcher too dangerous to live. Jolivet also reveals he knows about Tyndaris and insists the Palace keeps counsel only with the living.
At the Black Mansion, Lin emerges from isolation and finds Mayesh with Andreyen, Merren, and Ji-An. They reveal that Kel is accused of murdering Artal Gremont and Ciprian Cabrol, while Falconet, Alleyne, and Sardou speak against him. Mayesh has also been dismissed as Counselor, leaving Conor even more isolated. Andreyen refuses to break the old boundary between the Ragpicker King and Marivent, so Lin decides to go herself to the Palace and convince Conor. Mayesh walks Lin out despite the laws forbidding contact with an exile and admits he suspected Lin and Conor’s bond.
Conor visits Kel in the Trick. Kel insists Falconet and Jolivet are lying, but Conor explains that Falconet has produced witnesses and evidence showing Kel’s secret meetings, connection to the Ragpicker King, and role in Anjelica’s escape. Kel admits hiding the investigation but says Kel was protecting Conor. Conor, wounded by the secrecy and trapped by the politics of the Charter Families, says he cannot trust Kel or publicly forgive treason. Kel reaches out through the bars, repeating the Sword Catcher oath, but Conor walks away.
Lin reaches Marivent and finds Conor’s rooms destroyed, with broken bottles, bloodied glass, and Conor standing amid the wreckage. Lin embraces Conor, tells Conor she loves him, and says she will accept whatever part of him Conor can offer. Conor kisses Lin but then rejects the confession as possibly another manipulation to save Kel, condemning both Lin and Kel for lying to him. Lin warns that killing Kel will ruin Conor, but Conor says trust in them has become his weakness and orders Lin away from the Palace, from Conor, and from King Markus as his physician. Before leaving, Lin says she must tell Conor something about his father and about Conor himself.
