CHAPTER FOUR — Lin
Overview
Lin’s work at the Caravel exposes Artal Gremont’s cruelty when Silla reveals that he injured her and has been terrorizing the courtesans. The revelation deepens the danger surrounding Antonetta’s arranged marriage and shows Artal as not merely politically useful but personally vicious.
Silla also tells Lin that Kel and Conor have stopped visiting the Caravel, prompting Lin to reconsider Kel’s claims about change. The chapter links private brutality, class vulnerability, and Lin’s growing awareness of the moral costs behind Castellane’s elite arrangements.
Summary
Lin treats Silla, a courtesan at the Caravel, who resists medical attention for an injured wrist. Lin notices bruises on Silla’s throat and finds that Silla’s wrist is badly sprained, likely from someone grabbing and twisting it.
When Lin asks who hurt Silla, Silla first refers to nobles and the Prince’s friends, alarming Lin. Silla quickly clarifies that Prince Conor did not do it, saying that though Conor drinks and behaves foolishly, he has never been unkind during his years visiting the Caravel with his cousin.
Silla reveals that Artal Gremont caused the injury soon after arriving in Castellane. She says Alys knows but must tolerate Artal because of his powerful allies, and that the women at the Caravel despise him. Lin connects this to Artal’s political and marital future: he is set to take over the tea Charter and marry Antonetta of the silk Charter.
Lin considers whether to warn Antonetta, but doubts it would change anything because Antonetta seems determined to marry Artal. Lin also reflects that men like Artal may treat powerless women in the Temple District differently from wealthy women on the Hill, though the thought does not comfort her.
After Lin finishes bandaging Silla’s wrist, Silla asks about Kel Anjuman. Silla says Kel used to be a regular client but stopped visiting, as did Prince Conor; she once hoped Kel might make her an official mistress, which would give her security and independence. Lin recognizes both Kel’s kindness and the harsh truth that kindness is rare in Castellane.
