5. Sarah Morgan
Overview
Sarah resolves to pursue motherhood and asserts control at work by confronting Bob over exploiting Anne. Adam’s roses buoy her commitment. Matthew reenters her life, belittling parenthood and Adam’s stagnating career, sharpening Sarah’s doubts. With a major case looming, Sarah balances ambition with a newfound desire for family.
Summary
At home, Sarah wakes beside Adam, reflects on right and wrong, and resolves to pursue a family, hoping their efforts worked. She exchanges brief texts with Anne about the previous night and heads to the office determined to change course in her life.
Arriving at work, Sarah immediately confronts Bob for using Anne as his errand runner. She clarifies that she partly pays Anne’s salary and threatens to raise his behavior at the partners’ meeting if he continues. Bob blusters, and Sarah leaves, signaling control over her team.
Back in her office, Sarah finds roses from Adam with a card reading, “Sarah, it’s always been you,” reinforcing her renewed commitment to motherhood. She tells Anne they are trying for a baby, and Anne is excited.
Matthew, Sarah’s longtime friend from law school, drops in. He dismisses babies as “knick-knacks,” provoking Anne and needling Sarah with his cynical philosophy. Sarah confides her sudden desire for a child despite fears rooted in her difficult childhood and questions about timing and energy.
Matthew snarks that Adam’s flatlining career makes a child a search for meaning, while Anne defends Sarah’s stamina and suitability for motherhood. Matthew reveals he’ll be in D.C. on a six-month contract and asks for time together. After Anne steps out to prepare for court, Sarah assures Matthew she will make time, balancing her high-profile case with her new family goals.
